Men’s Wallets – The Most Common Styles

Men’s Wallets

Gone are the days of cookie-cutter men’s wallets; the market is ripe with exciting designs and styles for the fashionable man.  Choosing a wallet that is right for you should be based on your needs and the price that you are willing to pay for the wallet.  There are four basic types of men’s wallets, including:

  • Hipster.  The standard wallet that most men carry is called the U.S. style or hipster wallet.  This is a horizontally styled wallet that folds in the middle or features a tri-fold design and is slightly longer than a standard dollar bill.  These wallets are typically carried in the hip or back pocket.  The hipster men’s wallet usually has slots that hold eight to ten credit cards and a driver’s license or I.D. card.  Some hipster wallets will feature a plastic window that holds an I.D.
  • Vertical.  Another popular men’s wallet choice is the “Hong Kong” style or vertical wallet.  This type of wallet is taller than it is wide, and can accommodate taller types of foreign currency.  This is basically a taller and wider version of the hipster, and it usually has a flip out or flip up section that holds credit cards and pictures.  This is a good wallet choice if you are traveling out of the U.S.  It is usually carried in the back or hip pocket.
  • Front pocket wallet.  Many men don’t like the idea of carrying their wallet on their hip, whether due to the fact that it can be uncomfortable or that it makes them an easier target for pick-pockets.  The front pocket wallet is ideal for those men.  This men’s wallet holds just the essentials and is carried in the front shirt pocket.  Most men who carry a front pocket wallet will carry just their driver’s license and a couple of credit cards.  The front pocket wallet will allow for money to be carried inside if it is folded, so many men who carry this kind of wallet either use a money clip for bills or they don’t carry cash at all.
  • Lapel wallet.  The men’s lapel wallet is another good choice that is sometimes called the breast coat pocket wallet or long wallet.  This type of wallet is an elegant option that is best suited for formal attire and that is carried inside a man’s suit jacket.

You will find men’s wallets in a variety of different materials, although leather remains the most popular because of its durability.  Look for sportier materials, like canvas, if you want a men’s wallet for casual wear.
