Types of Leather
Most leather handbags are made of cowhide leather. This is one of the most long lasting leathers available today; however, this is also one of the most expensive leathers. Cowhide leather is also rather rough in texture. The softest leather is lambskin which is from sheep. This type of leather is generally used to make items that are smaller, such as a small purse, and the texture of the leather is smooth. This leather can scratch and tear easily. Artificial leather is often used in crafting handbags. This leather is known as faux and it has the look of the high end leathers. Most people can touch and look at faux leather and know that it is artificial. Real leather will crease and dent over time unlike the faux leather. Faux leather is very durable and requires less care than the real leathers that are used in crafting handbags. Patch leather is another popular type of leather that is used in manufacturing leather handbags. Small pieces of cowhide or lambskin that are left over from crafting items are used to make the handbags. Patch leather handbags are most usually much cheaper than others but are still of a high quality requiring proper care and maintenance.
Caring for Your Leather Handbags
The life of your leather handbags depends on the care that you give them. It is important to keep the leather clean and conditioned. Cleaning should be done with leather products available usually wherever you purchased your bag. You should use a non-dyed cloth for cleaning and only use a small amount of the product. It may be best to do a colorfast test in an area that is not easily seen before using the product on the entire handbag. Always follow the directions on the product. Leather handbags should be cleaned at least once a month to keep them looking great and maintain their durability. After cleaning, they should be conditioned. Always rub the conditioning product into the leather well. Conditioning the leather keeps it soft and prevents the leather from cracking and breaking. Leather does not dry easily and water should never be used for cleaning.
When leather handbags are not being used, they should be kept in a dry and dark area that is maintained at room temperature. These conditions will keep the leather in good condition and it will not fade or crack.
